The Morocco 2030 Foundation, in partnership with the National Council for Human Rights (CNDH), organized an international seminar on Tuesday under the theme “Sports as a Lever for Promoting Human Rights: What Impact on Society?” The event also included the signing of a cooperation agreement between the two institutions.
Amina Bouayach, President of the CNDH, explained that the Council has launched a four-year program with the Morocco 2030 Foundation to implement the agreement, especially regarding human rights in sports, with a particular focus on football.
Speaking to SNRTnews, Bouayach noted that sports have become a major factor in the social changes taking place in Morocco. She discussed how public expression, social media use, and citizens’ aspirations are increasingly shaped by sports, especially football.
Bouayach added that the new agreement is built on a clear vision that seeks to offer best practices to the international community. The partnership aims to advance rights related to sports and human rights through cooperation between a national human rights institution and the Morocco 2030 Foundation.
Bouayach signed the agreement alongside Fouzi Lekjaa, President of the Morocco 2030 Foundation.
Nawal El Moutawakel, Vice President of the International Olympic Committee, also emphasized the growing national, continental, and global impact of sports. She pointed out that Morocco is preparing to host several major international events, making the country a source of pride thanks to its achievements, particularly in football.
Both the CNDH and the Morocco 2030 Foundation stated that sports serve as a legal and normative tool to promote fundamental rights, including the right to participate in cultural life, the right to health, and the right to rest and leisure.
These rights are recognized in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and international conventions against racial and gender discrimination, they noted.
The CNDH will prepare a national human rights strategy to be implemented before, during, and after the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will host alongside Spain and Portugal.
Meanwhile, the Morocco 2030 Foundation will put these commitments into action. It will lead the coordination of preparations for upcoming major sporting events hosted by Morocco, especially the 2030 World Cup.
The Foundation will also oversee Morocco’s commitments related to human rights and the development of the necessary infrastructures to ensure that these global events contribute to strengthening economic and social development in the country.
