Morocco actively contributed to the work of the African Union (AU) Specialized Technical Committee (STC) on Justice and Legal Affairs by helping reconcile the viewpoints of African countries on numerous legal issues, highlighted Minister of Justice Abdellatif Ouahbi.
Morocco made a significant contribution to the various debates on the agenda of the STC on Justice and Legal Affairs, notably regarding the African Monetary Institute project and other legal instruments, particularly the draft annexes to the Protocol of the Agreement establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) concerning intellectual property rights, Minister Ouahbi told MAP at the conclusion of the STC ministerial meeting held on Tuesday in Nairobi.
In this context, Ouahbi emphasized Morocco’s mediation role during consultations among African justice ministers, aimed at finding consensual legal solutions following divergences observed in the positions of STC-JAJ member states.
The minister added that these divergences were primarily related to legal terminology, which did not receive unanimous agreement from the continent’s different legal schools, noting that Morocco’s efforts aim to enhance convergence of approaches and strengthen African legal cooperation.
Morocco’s participation in the 11th STC-JAJ session provided an opportunity to highlight the Kingdom’s pioneering experience in legislation and law, while reaffirming its commitment to promoting the harmonization of the continental legal framework within the African Union. In this regard, the delegation ensured that legal observations were aligned with the rules and standards in force within the AU.
Morocco was represented at this ministerial meeting by a senior delegation led by Ouahbi, which included the Director of Criminal Affairs, Pardons, and Crime Detection at the Ministry of Justice, Hicham Mellati, and representatives from departments that participated in the Meeting of Government Legal Experts.
