The Moroccan government approved a new decree on Friday that significantly expanded the responsibilities of its Communications Department, adding gaming and fake news verification to its duties.
During a meeting in Rabat, the Government Council adopted the proposal presented by Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication.
The new decree (No. 2.24.1143) adds two major responsibilities to the Communication department.
First, the newly approved decree is set to develop plans to grow Morocco’s video game industry. Second, it will create mechanisms to verify and combat fake news in institutional and public communications.
With this adoption, the government says its aim is to modernize the Communications Department’s structure to keep pace with rapid developments in media, communications, and digital transformation.
The reorganization will establish administrative structures that can effectively implement and monitor the department’s projects.
The restructuring creates three new directorates while maintaining the current Human Resources and Financial Directorate. The new additions include the Video Game Industry and Information Systems Development Directorate, the Media Studies and Modernization Directorate, and the Communication and Media Relations Directorate.
These changes will operate alongside the existing General Secretariat and General Inspectorate.
The decree represents Morocco’s response to emerging challenges in the digital communication ecosystem, particularly addressing concerns about misinformation while simultaneously investing in growing digital entertainment sectors.
Industry experts note that Morocco’s gaming industry has shown promising growth potential in recent years, with this formal recognition potentially accelerating the development of local talent and attracting international investment.
In January, the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication launched a program that aims to help entrepreneurs in the gaming industry to structure their businesses effectively, ensure their sustainable growth, and enhance technical capabilities in this ever-growing competitive sector.
