Morocco has adopted a comprehensive approach to addressing the complex, evolving and deeply interconnected challenges of cybersecurity, said on Wednesday in Marrakesh the Director General of the Directorate General for the Security of Information Systems (DGSSI), Brigadier General Abdellah Boutrig.
“At a time when digital threats are rapidly evolving, cybersecurity has become far more than a technical issue. It directly affects the sovereignty, stability and economic development of our countries,” he stressed in his opening remarks at the Strategic Digital Defence AI Readiness (STAR) Summit.
The event brings together the entire African cybersecurity ecosystem around a strategic dialogue on digital defense, and is being held as part of GITEX Africa Morocco in partnership with the DGSSI.
According to the official, addressing these challenges goes beyond a unilateral framework, as cyber resilience, now a strategic imperative, is undeniably built through a multi-country approach within a comprehensive framework.
Given the cross-border nature of cybersecurity challenges, he highlighted Morocco’s significant efforts in regional and international cooperation and coordination, particularly in Africa, where the Kingdom actively contributes to the work of the African Network of Cybersecurity Authorities (ANCA), of which it has held the vice-presidency since 2022.
“This reflects a spirit of solidarity in the service of the continent’s resilience,” he said, stressing the importance of a vibrant private-sector ecosystem in each country and strong human capital as key drivers.
The DGSSI Director General also pointed to a “shortage” of qualified operational cybersecurity professionals, calling for strengthened initial and ongoing training, better alignment of academic curricula with field needs, and greater specialization of skills.
All these challenges require a collective, structured and resolutely pragmatic response, hence the importance of the panels scheduled as part of GITEX Africa Morocco, which will address, in particular, the implementation of national strategies, cross-border cooperation, cyber risk management for critical environments, and the strengthening of human capacities, he concluded.
