Morocco delivered 2,000 tons of fertilizer to Ghana on Monday to support the West African nation’s “Feed Ghana” program.
The North African country’s OCP Africa made the delivery possible, coordinating with Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture to officially receive the donation on July 29.
The delivery by Morocco’s state-owned phosphate company is part of efforts aimed at expanding bilateral cooperation between Rabat and Accra in agriculture, industry, and education.
Morocco’s Ambassador to Ghana, Imane Ouaadil, attended alongside Ghana’s Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture John Dumelo.
The “Feed Ghana” program is a government-led initiative that seeks to boost local farmers’ productivity, create jobs, and strengthen the West African country’s food security.
The Moroccan ambassador said that the donation is in line with Morocco’s commitment to strengthening long-standing solidarity between the two countries, following the vision of King Mohammed VI and President John Dramani Mahama.
Ouaadil noted that the delivery fulfills commitments made during Minister Ablakwa’s recent visit to Rabat, where he met with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita. The meeting was also an opportunity to sign a visa waiver agreement, boosting relations between the two African countries.
Deputy Minister Dumelo commended the donation as “a generous gesture that perfectly aligns” with the ongoing transformation in Ghana’s agricultural sector. He argued that officials will “fully utilize the fertilizers to serve the program’s objectives” and promised strict monitoring of their use.
As for the relations between the two countries, Ghana’s Ablakwa pointed out the depth of the Morocco-Ghana partnership, noting that cooperation already extends to areas like agricultural research.
He pointed to the recent hosting of Moroccan experts in Accra as an example of this expanding collaboration.
The fertilizer delivery strengthens Morocco’s growing presence in West Africa and demonstrates both countries’ commitment to regional food security and agricultural development.
Morocco’s fertilizer contribution goes beyond donations in Africa. The country launched in 2024 its Farmer Service Centers (FSC) project in Rwanda in collaboration with USAID.
The program is set to provide services including soil fertility mapping and a farmer’s credit scoring model, aiming to boost farmers’ yields, sustainability, and lasting economic growth.
The North African country has also deepened its agricultural collaboration with Kenya through a significant soil mapping initiative, demonstrating the country’s commitment to precision agriculture in East Africa.
This partnership with Kenya marked a shift from simply supplying fertilizers to providing customized solutions based on specific soil needs, benefiting over 100 participants.
