Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Leila Benali highlighted on Tuesday in Dar Es-Salaam, Tanzania, the Kingdom’s achievements in promoting access to electricity.

Speaking at the Mission 300 African Energy Summit (January 27-28), the Minister underlined the Kingdom’s efforts in rural electrification, investment in renewables and strengthening regional energy connectivity, highlighting strategic initiatives undertaken by Morocco to support the global energy transition.

In this regard, Benali recalled that the rural electrification rate in Morocco has reached 99.88%, marking an important milestone in widespread access to energy.

The Kingdom benefits from 30 years’ experience in attracting private capital to finance energy infrastructure, she stated, recalling that Morocco launched its first independent power producer project as early as 1992.

This long track record has enabled the Kingdom to acquire solid experience in structuring bankable projects, which it can now capitalize on to establish win-win partnerships, the Minister stressed.

Benali also pointed out that Morocco had made massive investments in renewable energies. These efforts include a five-fold increase in annual investment in electricity grids and a three-fold increase in energy production, including renewables.

These projects, she noted, are accompanied by a requirement for 30% local industrial content.

The “Mission 300” African Energy Summit kicked off on Monday in Dar Es-Salaam, Tanzania, with the aim of taking ambitious action to boost access to electricity in Africa.

Leila Benali is leading a large delegation to the event, including Morocco’s Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania and the Union of Comoros Zakaria El Goumiri, as well as officials from the Energy Transition Department.
