Morocco’s Ministry of the Interior has urgently called on citizens to strictly follow evacuation orders due to the risk of very heavy rainfall that could reach up to 150 millimeters.
The ministry urges locals to comply with all safety measures, especially immediate evacuation, in areas considered high risk.
These include three municipalities in Larache Province, including Ksar El Kebir, Souaken, and Oulad Ouchih, as well as the Larache industrial zone and areas near the mouth of the Loukkos River.
The region has experienced unusually heavy rain in recent weeks, which has filled Oued Al Makhazine dam to its full capacity.
With authorities emptying some of the excess water as rainfall persists, water levels in the Loukous river increased, causing flooding in nearby areas.
These include Ksar El Kebir, which bore the brunt of the floods. Authorities in the small city have been assisting locals and helping them evacuate in recent days.
In addition, authorities have provided dozens of buses and several trains to transport residents to safer areas.
They have, however, changed their approach last night, going from urging residents to leave their houses and evacuate the city, to forcing them to leave. Several people, especially the elderly, have refused to leave their houses.
Videos shared online showed security personnel escorting people out of their houses last night to prevent further harm.
