Morocco was honored on Sunday in Cairo for its efforts in supporting cooperation between the League of Arab States (LAS) and the European Union (EU) in combating trafficking and the illegal proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the League’s member states.
This recognition was also extended to Jordan and the United Arab Emirates at the sidelines of the meeting marking the conclusion of the second phase of the cooperation project between the parties “to combat illicit smaller arms and light weapons in the member states of the Arab League.”
The tribute to Morocco recognizes its efforts in supporting this cooperation by hosting the first programs implemented during the second phase of the joint project between the two sides on “The fight against trafficking and the illegal proliferation of small arms and light weapons in member States of the Arab League,” and also by hosting the inaugural regional workshop in Tangier in 2022, as well as national training sessions in Rabat.
Held by the Directorate of Arms Control and Disarmament under the International Political Affairs Sector of the Arab League, in cooperation with the EU and the project’s implementing partners (including Interpol and the World Customs Organization), the two-day meeting in Cairo is the result of ongoing cooperation between the two parties and their shared belief in the importance of coordination and joint efforts between regional and international organizations to end the illicit trafficking of small arms and light weapons.
During this meeting, the second phase of the cooperation project was evaluated, and the prospects for future collaboration between the two organizations were discussed.
