Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita conveyed Morocco’s position on the recent since Bashar al-Assad’s upheaval, noting that his country hopes the new situation brings stability to Syria.
“Morocco has been closely monitoring the significant and rapid developments in Syria,” Bourita said in a press conference today, recalling Morocco’s consistent position supporting Syria’s territorial integrity, national sovereignty, and the unity of its people.
Bourita noted that this stance is steadfast and will remain so for the North African country.
The Moroccan foreign minister further said he hopes the new developments also fulfill “the aspirations of its people, and pave the way for a brighter future and greater development for the country.”
He recalled that Morocco had closed its embassy in Damascus and requested the closure of the Syrian embassy in 2012, calling for decisive and active steps to achieve a political transition towards a democratic framework that ensures Syria’s stability.
The decision came following repression and violence targeting civilians in Syria.
Bourita said that despite this decision, Morocco has always stood with the country and has been supporting its sovereignty and non interference.
Bourita further said that the Moroccan government also prioritized the stability and unity of the country in line with its peoples’ wishes.
On Sunday, Syrian rebels announced that Syria has been liberated from al-Assad rule, after seizing several strategic cities since November 27.
Celebrations are ongoing in Syria as the rebel group ended the regime’s rule and pledged a smooth political transition to meet Syrians’ demands.
