The African Beach Volleyball Championship kicked off Wednesday in Martil, serving as a qualifying tournament for the 2025 World Championship to be held in Australia from November 14 to 23.
Organized by the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) and the Royal Moroccan Volleyball Federation (FRMVB), the event features 88 women’s pairs from 22 countries and 114 men’s pairs from 27 nations. Four World Cup slots—two per gender—are up for grabs.
Moroccan teams made a strong start, with clean sweeps in both the men’s and women’s competitions. Notably, the El Gharouti/Saber and El Azhari/Walid duos won both their matches in straight sets, while Mahassine/Dina and Zeroual/Yakki led the women’s victories.
FRMVB President Bouchra Hajij praised Martil’s capacity to host high-level events, while national coach Rachid Bouchdouk said Morocco is well-positioned to defend its men’s title and contend for the women’s crown.
The U21 African Beach Volleyball Championship will also take place concurrently in Martil.
