Morocco has invested 7.9 billion dirhams to upgrade 21 old medinas across the kingdom, Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch said on Monday.

Speaking at the House of Representatives’ question time, Akhannouch highlighted the Government’s efforts to accelerate the implementation of this large-scale program, which aims to promote Morocco’s centuries-old medinas, improve the living conditions of their inhabitants, preserve their architectural heritage, and promote their wealth and cultural authenticity.

The restoration programs also aim to promote some of Morocco’s more popular tourism destinations, including Salé (Rabat twin city), Meknes, Fez, Tetouan, Marrakech, and the coastal city of Essaouira.

The Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, the National Initiative for Human Development, the Ministry of Housing, the Ministry of Tourism, the Marrakech Urban Agency, the State Secretariat for Vocational Training, and Al Omrane Holding partner to carry out this project.

Each city will receive a portion of the budget. The Hassan II Fund for Economic and Social Development will contribute approximately 40% of the budget.
