Morocco’s General Directorate of Meteorology has issued an orange-level alert, warning of severe weather conditions expected to affect several regions across the country this weekend.
The alert includes significant snowfall, heavy rainfall, and strong winds, which could pose risks to local populations and infrastructure. The adverse weather is expected to begin on Friday and continue into Saturday, with the potential for hazardous conditions in various provinces.
Starting Friday at 5:40 PM until Saturday at 12:00 PM, snowfall is expected to impact the provinces of Ifrane, Boulemane, Azilal, Béni Mellal, Al Haouz, Chichaoua, Tinghir, Ouarzazate, Midelt, Khénifra, and Taroudant. Areas above 1,600 meters in altitude may see snow accumulation ranging from 10 to 25 cm.
Heavy rainfall is forecasted in the provinces of Kenitra, Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, Ouezzane, Nouaceur, El Jadida, Sidi Bennour, Settat, Casablanca, Berrechid, Taroudant, and Agadir-Ida-Outanane.
The rainfall, which could range from 25 to 40 mm, may also be accompanied by thunderstorms, and will last from Friday at 5:40 PM until midnight.
The same weather disturbance is expected to affect the provinces of Nador, Al Hoceima, Berkane, Driouch, Taourirt, and Oujda-Angad from Friday at 5:40 PM until Saturday at 7:00 PM.
Powerful winds, ranging from 70 to 85 km/h, are anticipated in the provinces of Figuig, Jerada, Errachidia, Ouarzazate, Zagora, Boulemane, Taourirt, and Tinghir from Friday at 5:40 PM until 9:00 PM.
These winds will be accompanied by dust storms, the directorate predicts, noting that this may impact visibility and air quality.
