Morocco’s Ministry of Equipment and Water has urged motorists to take heightened precautions as severe weather affects large parts of the country, with heavy rainfall and snowfall expected to disrupt road traffic in several provinces.
The warning follows a meteorological alert from the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM), which forecasts intense rainstorms across northern and central regions.
According to official estimates, precipitation may reach up to 150 millimeters in provinces such as Chefchaouen, Tetouan, Tanger-Assilah, Larache, Ouezzane, and Fahs-Anjra, while other areas, including Taounate, Al Hoceima, Taza, Kenitra, and Sidi Kacem, may also record substantial rainfall.
Mountainous regions face additional challenges as snowfall is expected on elevations above 1,500 meters.
Snow accumulation may reach between 40 and 60 centimeters in provinces such as Ifrane, Midelt, Boulemane, and Tinghir, with lower yet disruptive levels forecast in other highland areas.
These conditions are expected to persist from tonight through Wednesday, raising the likelihood of traffic disruptions and temporary road closures.
The ministry advised road users to avoid travel during nighttime hours whenever possible and to prepare thoroughly before setting out.
Drivers are urged to check essential vehicle components, including brakes, tires, lighting systems, heating, and fuel reserves, to reduce the risk of breakdowns in difficult conditions.
The ministry also cautioned against driving through flood-prone sections, particularly low-lying roads and crossings near rivers and streams.
Motorists are warned not to attempt crossing submerged roads during periods of high water, while maintaining moderate speeds and safe distances between vehicles.
Authorities further called on drivers to comply with road signage and follow instructions issued by local authorities and on-site road services.
These measures, the ministry said, aim to limit accidents and ensure safer mobility during a period marked by unstable weather conditions.
