Morocco recorded the strongest improvement in internet performance in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region in 2025, according to Ookla’s Speedtest Global Index.
The country jumped 22 places in the global mobile internet ranking, restoring Morocco’s position as North Africa’s top-performing market for mobile speeds.
Morocco ranked 39th globally for mobile internet performance by December 2025, a sharp rise compared to the start of the year. The improvement follows the launch of 5G services in November 2025, combined with continued investment in network modernization and fiber infrastructure, according to the report.
Although Morocco was among the last North African countries to introduce 5G, the rollout had a strong impact in the final months of the year. Increased consumer adoption led to a rise in high-speed 5G tests, which pushed up the country’s median mobile download speed and lifted its global ranking.
This late, but effective, rollout allowed Morocco to overtake Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria to become the leading country in North Africa for mobile internet performance by the end of 2025. Morocco also improved its position in fixed broadband, rising 11 places in 2025 to rank 105th globally. The country recorded a median fixed download speed of 56.27 Mbps in the fourth quarter of the year, supported by the gradual expansion of fiber-optic networks.
While fixed broadband performance still trails more advanced markets in the Gulf, the progress reflects Morocco’s ongoing transition from older DSL infrastructure to faster fiber-based connections.
Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries continued to dominate both mobile and fixed internet rankings across the MEA region. The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Oman remained regional leaders, with several ranking in the global top 10 for mobile speeds throughout 2025.
North Africa, however, saw the biggest shifts. Four out of five countries in the sub-region launched 5G in 2025, but Morocco recorded the most significant overall improvement. Algeria also made gains after launching 5G in December, while Tunisia and Egypt saw more modest or uneven results.
According to Ookla, Morocco’s ranking may slightly fall in 2026 as 5G usage becomes more widespread.
