Equality and parity are not merely social demands, but a strategic choice and a development need, said the Minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, on Wednesday.
Speaking at the 2nd Annual Parliamentary Forum on Equality and Parity, organized by the House of Representatives, Bensaid emphasized that “no society can claim to achieve sustainable and inclusive development while excluding or marginalizing half of its energy and capacities.”
He stressed that women’s participation in political decision-making at the parliamentary, governmental, and local levels enriches dialogue and better addresses the needs of all segments of society.
Held under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, this event is in line with the Royal Vision of promoting the political participation of Moroccan women and their presence within institutions, the minister noted, recalling that this dynamic began in 2002, when 30 seats were reserved for women on an additional national list in the Lower House, following the election in 1993 of the first two women to Parliament.
Political empowerment of women is a lever for strengthening good governance and achieving social justice, he said, noting that Morocco’s political experience has shown that women engaged in political life have achieved significant results, leaving a strong mark on the work of the legislative and executive branches, as well as on various elected institutions and political bodies.
This forum provides an opportunity to build on key accomplishments achieved in the Kingdom and reflects the parliament’s will to follow-up the implementation of the constitutional provisions related to women public empowerment, institutionalize the parliamentary debate on equality and parity, and open dialogue perspectives and public debate with the stakeholders concerned with public empowerment, equality and parity.
