Secretary of State for Maritime Fisheries Zakia Driouich and Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Norway to the Kingdom of Morocco Helge Andreas Seland met on Tuesday in Rabat to discuss prospects for strengthening bilateral cooperation in the maritime fisheries sector.

On this occasion, Driouich praised the quality and strength of the fisheries partnership between Morocco and Norway under the enlightened leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and HM Harald V, King of Norway, based on a shared vision of sustainable management of marine resources, reinforcing control mechanisms, and combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, according to a press release from the State Secretariat for Maritime Fisheries.

Driouich and Seland reaffirmed the strategic importance of cooperation in areas of control, traceability, and modernization of fishing activity monitoring tools.

Discussions focused in particular on developing sustainable aquaculture, highlighting the importance of skills development and training, in light of the program supported by Norway and the Netherlands in partnership with the FAO, and the prospects for enshrining structural projects such as the STADIF project.

Both parties expressed interest in exploring new forms of cooperation in specialized, high-level training, with a view to supporting the emergence of an African model for aquaculture training and development.

Finally, talks focused on the main challenge facing the global fisheries sector, namely the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems and the availability of fishery resources.

In this context, both parties emphasized the need to strengthen scientific cooperation, innovation, and multilateral coordination in order to support adaptive and resilient management policies.
