Morocco now has an operational and regulated framework for therapeutic cannabis, with a structured supply already available, Director General of the National Agency for the Regulation of Cannabis-Related Activities (ANRAC), Mohamed El Guerrouj, said on Saturday in Casablanca.

Speaking at the opening of the first scientific conference on the therapeutic use of cannabis, organized by ANRAC in partnership with the Moroccan Society of Medical Sciences (SMSM), El Guerrouj said that more than 140 cannabis-based products have been manufactured by Morocco’s pharmaceutical industry and officially registered with the Moroccan Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AMMPS).

These products are available through more than 600 outlets authorized by the AMMPS, he added, commending the strong mobilization of the pharmaceutical community in support of this initiative.

El Guerrouj also noted that Morocco has successfully moved beyond the agricultural and industrial production stages, although the therapeutic use of cannabis-derived products remains relatively limited.

In this regard, he stressed that it is now up to scientific societies, prescribing physicians and medical researchers to expand therapeutic applications and develop new forms of medical use for cannabis-based products.

He underscored the crucial role of scientific societies, describing them as an essential bridge toward broader therapeutic use of cannabis products, which would also help ensure the sustainability of activities undertaken by small-scale farmers.
