Morocco, Portugal Discuss Deepened Justice Partnership, Legal & Judicial Security Promotion

alks held Thursday in Rabat between Morocco’s Justice Minister Abdellatif Ouahbi and his Portuguese counterpart Rita Alarcao Júdice, who is on a working visit to Morocco, focused on strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the fields of justice and the consolidation of legal and judicial security.

The meeting provided an opportunity for Ouahbi and Alarcao Júdice to discuss means of developing legal and judicial cooperation mechanisms between the two countries, promoting the exchange of experiences, and exploring new partnership opportunities in various areas of justice, including civil and criminal cooperation, handling cross-border cases, and strengthening mutual legal assistance mechanisms.

The two ministers also agreed to continue implementing existing cooperation mechanisms, strengthen institutional coordination, and launch new joint initiatives focused on organizing regular meetings between officials and experts, exchanging visits, as well as developing joint action plans and establishing direct communication channels between the judicial institutions of both countries.

In a statement to MAP, Ouahbi noted that this meeting demonstrates shared commitment to elevating judicial cooperation between Morocco and Portugal through promoting coordination mechanisms and the exchange of expertise, given the growing challenges posed by cross-border crime, adding that strengthening legal and judicial security is an essential lever for consolidating confidence in the justice system and ensuring the protection of rights and freedoms.

To this end, the minister emphasized the importance of continuing to modernize the justice system by accelerating digital transformation, simplifying procedures, developing mechanisms for international cooperation, and ensuring the effective enforcement of court decisions, with the aim of improving judicial performance and the quality of services provided to users.

For her part, Alarcao Júdice stated that cooperation between Portugal and Morocco in the judicial field serves as a distinguished model of constructive partnership based on trust and the exchange of expertise, noting that bolstering coordination among judicial institutions helps support joint efforts to address various current legal challenges.

She also expressed her country’s commitment to continuing to support this positive momentum through the exchange of best practices and strengthening cooperation in areas of mutual interest, particularly regarding the fight against organized crime, the modernization of the judicial administration, the promotion of training and professional development and of the use of digital tools in the management of judicial structures.
