In a press briefing on Tuesday, Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita reiterated the core principles of Morocco’s position on the Middle East as defined by King Mohammed VI, President of the Al-Quds Committee.
Bourita stated that Morocco’s stance on the Palestinian cause is clear and has been repeatedly outlined by the King. The country calls for moving beyond crisis management and establishing parameters for a lasting solution. Morocco supports a two-state solution, with a Palestinian state based on the June 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital.
The Foreign Minister emphasized that extremists on both sides should not be allowed to control the agenda in the Middle East, and that it is time for constructive actors to regain control and initiative to prevent the region from being held hostage by extremists.
Bourita also stressed the fundamental importance of protecting civilians in accordance with ethics, international law, and religious principles. He condemned attacks on civilians and warned against the expansion of the conflict to Lebanon, which he said could lead to instability for the entire region.
“It is time for mobilization, and the United Nations bodies must fully assume their responsibilities to stop the attacks on the Palestinian people,” Bourita asserted.
He reaffirmed Morocco’s condemnation of Israel’s attacks on schools, hospitals, and thousands of women and children, as well as the blocking of humanitarian aid and the policy aimed at “starving” Palestinians in their territories.
Morocco condemns inappropriate remarks and attacks against the United Nations Secretary-General and foreign heads of state, Bourita noted, stressing that Morocco rejects such attacks on well-intentioned figures who seek only to find solutions.
These attacks do not contribute to de-escalation or the search for quick solutions to the conflict, he argued, noting that instability in the Middle East fuels hatred and extremism and serves as a factor that nourishes terrorism.
Bourita concluded by stating that all well-intentioned efforts and proposals should be examined constructively, and that decisions to accept or reject them are sovereign ones that must be made within the framework of mutual respect.
