Minister of Health and Social Protection, Amine Tahraoui, announced on Monday in Rabat a significant 80% decrease in the number of measles cases in Morocco compared to the peak recorded 16 weeks ago, thanks to the vaccination campaign.

Responding to an oral question at the House of Representatives on the progress of the measles vaccination campaign, Tahraoui noted that the national weekly incidence rate stands at one case per 100,000 people. He emphasized that since the emergence of the first measles cases in Morocco, the Ministry has been working to develop a national plan to combat its spread, supported by a range of field measures.

The minister also shared the results of the epidemiological monitoring of the disease, noting that as of May 16, the vaccination status of more than 10.76 million children under the age of 18 had been verified, covering 98.57% of the target group.

This operation identified 754,202 children who were either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated, he added, stressing that thanks to intensive field mobilization, 586,912 of these children were vaccinated, representing a completion rate of approximately 78%.

This effort significantly helped to close the vaccination coverage gap and limit the spread of the outbreak, he stressed.

Furthermore, Tahraoui pointed out that this campaign surpassed the 95% national verified rate of full measles vaccination coverage among all children under the age of 18—the rate recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).
