Morocco and the Netherlands inked on Monday in London a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening their cooperation in the field of maritime transport.
The MoU was signed by Morocco’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, and Dutch Minister of Infrastructure and Water Management, Robert Tieman, on the sidelines of the 34th Session of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Assembly, currently taking place in the British capital.
The agreement seeks to establish mutual recognition of seafarers’ certificates of competency, in line with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
It also aims to promote the mobility of seafarers and ensure compliance with international standards for training and certification, in accordance with the STCW Convention.
This MoU reflects the commitment of both parties to implement the necessary measures for the effective application of the STCW Convention, thereby contributing to maritime safety, the quality of seafarers’ skills, and the competitiveness of fleets.
It also demonstrates the determination of Morocco and the Netherlands to strengthen technical and regulatory cooperation, promote maritime exchanges, and support the sustainable development of the sector.
Speaking on this occasion, Tieman stated that the memorandum would allow both parties to recognize the certificates of seafarers serving on Dutch and Moroccan vessels and would facilitate the recruitment of highly qualified personnel in the sector.
The Dutch minister, who welcomed the signing of the agreement, stressed that it marks an important moment for both countries at a time when global developments call for greater cooperation.
For his part, Kayouh noted that the memorandum paves the way for deeper cooperation with the Netherlands, an established maritime nation with extensive experience in the field.
