Morocco will be taking part in the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council, to be held from February 24 to April 04 in Geneva.
The Moroccan delegation at this session will be led by the Minister of Justice, Abdellatif Ouahbi, and will include representatives from several relevant government departments and institutions, according to a press release from the Inter-Ministerial Delegation for Human Rights.
Ouahbi will deliver a speech on behalf of the Kingdom at the high-level segment of this session on Monday, which will bring together heads of state and government and senior UN officials.
The Minister of Justice will also hold a series of bilateral meetings with his counterparts, notably from sister Arab and African countries, as well as with senior officials from the United Nations and international organizations.
Morocco will also organize, in partnership with Paraguay and Portugal, a parallel high-level meeting which will be kicked off on February 25 by the Minister of Justice, under the theme: “The international network of national reporting and monitoring mechanisms: Strengthening cooperation, encouraging membership and presenting the Marrakech framework for action.”
The Secretary-General of the Inter-Ministerial Delegation for Human Rights, Fatima Berkane, will take the opportunity to highlight the progress made and future prospects of the international network of national reporting and monitoring mechanisms in the field of human rights.
This meeting is an opportunity to follow up on the conclusions of the 10th Glion Human Rights Dialogue, held in Marrakech in October 2024, to present the Marrakech Framework for Action as a reference document, and to outline the next steps for promoting cooperation and strengthening the capacities of these national mechanisms.
The session will also provide an opportunity to share the Moroccan experience on “the contribution of the judiciary to the advancement of human rights and the issue of the death penalty,” through an intervention by the Director of Criminal Affairs, Pardons and Crime Detection at the Ministry of Justice, Hicham Mellati, during a high-level panel scheduled for February 25.
Morocco’s participation at this 58th Session of the Human Rights Council will also be marked by an intervention on the theme “Tolerance and inclusion in sport: a catalyst for the promotion of human rights,” presented by Berkane as part of a side event scheduled for February 27.
This large-scale participation illustrates the Kingdom’s firm commitment to positive and active involvement in the international human rights system, and to contributing to the development of related UN mechanisms, as demonstrated by Morocco’s presidency of the Human Rights Council in 2024, and its determination to maintain this commitment in similar international forums, the press release concluded.
