Morocco is working to strengthen the material resources dedicated to hydrographic, oceanographic, and cartographic activities, notably through the deployment of a modern network of wave and tide data acquisition systems, said Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka on Wednesday in Casablanca.
In a speech delivered at the opening of the Seminar on African Cooperation in the Fields of Hydrography, Oceanography, and Marine Cartography, Baraka stressed that the Kingdom also attaches particular importance to the prevention and management of natural disasters by implementing the necessary measures to mitigate their impacts and strengthen crisis management.
In this regard, he recalled that the Ministry of Equipment and Water is leading several major projects, including the SATAM project, relating to the study and establishment of a national tsunami warning system, as well as the IBF (Impact-Based Forecast) project, which provides decision-makers and the general public with concrete information on potential impacts and appropriate safety measures.
With a view to strengthening regional and African cooperation and sharing expertise, Baraka noted that the Ministry contributes through continuous training, workshops, and joint projects with brotherly African countries in the field of maritime meteorology, in partnership with international organizations.
These actions, he added, reflect the Kingdom’s determination to promote the sharing of expertise and foster maritime cooperation on a continental scale.
This seminar is being held from October 8 to 10 in Casablanca by the National Defense Administration and the Royal Navy in implementation of the High Instructions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist Him, Supreme Commander and Chief of the General Staff of the Royal Armed Forces.
It brings together representatives of African member countries of the Conference of the Eastern Atlantic Hydrographic Commission, the Director of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), the Director of the Norwegian Regional Electronic Chart Distribution Center, and representatives of the French Navy’s Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service.
