Morocco’s autonomy initiative for its southern provinces “continues to gain credibility among world powers” as the only lasting solution to the artificial conflict over the Moroccan Sahara, Belgian international law expert Patrick Saerens said Wednesday.
In a statement to MAP, he emphasized that by reaffirming its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, in line with the position communicated by President Donald Trump to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, and its support for the Moroccan autonomy plan, the U.S. administration has once again validated the plan as the only realistic and credible solution to the conflict.
He noted that the U.S. stance aligns with those of several global capitals, including Paris and Madrid, and further bolsters the growing international momentum in favor of the autonomy plan, particularly among key actors within the UN
The expert also highlighted Morocco’s development efforts in the southern provinces under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, pointing to their “extremely favorable” economic impact. He added this development dynamic reinforces Morocco’s credibility on the international stage and supports a fair and lasting resolution based on the autonomy plan.
In this context, Saerens called on the EU to take a “more active role” in supporting the initiative, noting that a strong majority of European countries already back Morocco’s proposal.
During a meeting on Tuesday in Washington between Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates Nasser Bourita and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the latter “reaffirmed that the United States recognizes Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.”
In a statement released by the U.S. Department of State following the meeting, the Secretary of State reaffirmed that the United States “continues to believe that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the only feasible solution.”
In this regard, he emphasized the U.S. President’s “urging for the parties to engage in discussions without delay, using Morocco’s Autonomy Proposal as the only framework, to negotiate a mutually acceptable solution.”
