Moroccan Khadija Bendam was appointed on Tuesday as president of the International Nuclear Society Council (INSC) during its General Assembly held in Vienna as part of the 69th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
With this election, Bendam becomes the first woman worldwide to hold this prestigious position within the INSC, marking a historic milestone for female representation in international nuclear bodies.
This designation also reflects Morocco’s influence at the regional and international levels, confirming its status in strategic and cutting-edge sectors and cementing its leading role in international leadership and cooperation.
The INSC succession process provides for a structured progression within the Executive: from the position of Secretary to Second Vice President, then First Vice President, before becoming President and then President-Elect. This career path reflects a five-year commitment to international governance in the nuclear sector.
Bendam is currently responsible for nuclear and radiological safety and security audits at the National Center for Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology (CNESTEN).
She is also president of Women in Nuclear (WiN) Morocco, a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of WiN Global and WiN Africa, and vice president of the Arab Women in CBRN Security Network.
The appointment ceremony was attended by delegates representing several countries around the world, including Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Korea, Japan, Mexico, Pakistan, Slovakia, and the United States.
The INSC brings together nuclear societies from around the world, representing over 80,000 nuclear professionals internationally. It provides a global forum where these institutions discuss, define, and establish common goals, reflecting the vision and positions of experts and workers in the sector through their member societies.
Founded on November 11, 1990, by the International Group of Nuclear Societies (INSG), the INSC holds non-governmental organization status with the IAEA and the United Nations Environment Programme.
Through this appointment, the INSC reaffirms commitment to diversity, inclusive leadership, and strengthening international cooperation in the nuclear field.
