Morocco’s Port Traffic Increases by 8.9% in 2025

Moroccan ports recorded positive growth in overall port traffic, which reached 262.6 million tons in 2025 compared to 241.2 million tons in 2024, an increase of 8.9%, according to the Ministry of Equipment and Water.

Domestic traffic recorded a volume of 130 million tons, an increase of 3.5%, while transshipment reached a volume of 132.6 million tons, a growth of 14.7% compared to 2024, the ministry said in a press release.

Overall port traffic in 2025 was dominated by transshipment activity, accounting for 50.5% of the total, followed by imports with 29.6%, exports with 15.7%, cabotage with 3.6% and bunkering with 0.6%, the same source says.

In terms of transshipment activity, the Tanger Med port complex has confirmed its status as a major logistics platform in the Mediterranean basin, thanks to an increase in container transshipment volume (128.7 million tons/+14.4%, equivalent to 10.3 million TEUs/+7.9%).

Imports amounted to 77.6 million tons in 2025, marking a 2.8% increase compared to 2024, according to the press release.

The evolution of imports for the main traffic categories is as follows: hydrocarbons (13.4 million tons/+3.9%), coal (10.4 million tons/+7.3%), containers (13.5 million tons/+14.6%), international road transport (6.9 million tons/+7%), cereals (10.1 million tons/-4.5%) and sulfur (6.7 million tons/-18.2%).

Exports, meanwhile, rose by 1.4% in 2025, with a volume of 41.3 million tons, the ministry added, detailing that the evolution of exports of the main traffic was as follows: raw phosphate (6.8 million tons/+4%), containers (6.3 million tons/+10.4%), international road transport (6.5 million tons/+5.2%), sulfuric acid (1.5 million tons/-24.2%), phosphoric acid (2.6 million tons/-17.1%), and fertilizers (12 million tons/-0.9%).

As for coastal shipping, trade between Moroccan ports increased by 24.3% compared to 2024, reaching a volume of 9.3 million tons in 2025, mainly driven by the increase in coastal shipping of hydrocarbons (+41%) and phosphoric acid (+318.5%).

In addition, bunkering, concentrated in the port of Tanger Med, fell by 4.2% compared to 2024, recording a volume of 1.7 million tons.

New vehicle traffic fell by 5.8% in 2025, recording a volume of 662,990 units, of which approximately 70% were destined for export.

In terms of passenger traffic, Moroccan ports handled 5,585,310 passengers in 2025, an increase of 5.4% compared to 2024. The ports of the Strait of Gibraltar, Tanger Med, and Tangier City handled more than 84% of total passenger traffic.

Cruise activity continued its positive trend with 383,231 cruise passengers in 2025, an increase of 41.7% compared to 2024.

Furthermore, the volume of coastal and artisanal marine fishery landings in 2025 fell by 15.2% to 1.13 million tons.

Moroccan ports recorded 28,664 commercial ship calls, a slight decrease of 2.6% compared to 2024.

Ports of Tanger Med, Jorf Lasfar, and Casablanca handled a volume of 232 million tons in 2025, accounting for almost 88% of total traffic, the press release concludes.
