Thanks to the virtuous momentum witnessed in all areas, Morocco’s Southern provinces are set to become a key player in the new geopolitics of the South Atlantic, according to Brazilian political scientist Jacintho Maia Neto.

“Thanks to the remarkable development momentum of Morocco in general, and Southern provinces in particular, the latter are set to become a key and indispensable player in the new geopolitics of the South Atlantic,” Maia Neto said in an interview with MAP on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Glorious Green March.

According to this expert, these territories are becoming pivotal in terms of logistics and diplomacy, particularly in trade between Africa and South America.

He highlighted certain structural projects such as the 1,000 km Tiznit-Dakhla expressway and the Dakhla-Atlantic port, which will boost connectivity, regional growth, and Morocco’s cooperation with African and international partners.

Once completed, he said, these projects will make Southern provinces a true logistics hub for the South Atlantic, enhancing Morocco’s economic ties with South America.

He also underlined the importance of the Royal Atlantic Initiative, launched by HM King Mohammed VI in 2023, as a decisive step in positioning Morocco as a geostrategic link between Africa and the Afro-South American Atlantic space.

By offering port and logistics access to Sahel countries such as Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, Morocco is strengthening its role in reshaping trade and energy flows between West Africa and South America.

This dynamic, Maia Neto concluded, integrates Morocco into a broader Atlantic governance framework rooted in South-South cooperation, supported by major projects like the African Atlantic gas pipeline and the Dakhla-Atlantic port.
