The next ministerial meeting of the Atlantic African States Process (AASP) will take place in September in New York, according to the final declaration adopted at the conclusion of the fifth AASP meeting, held on Thursday in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde.

“Ministers have decided to hold their next ministerial meeting in New York in September 2025, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly,” the final declaration stated, noting that the meeting will be dedicated to monitoring the recommendations of the first Implementation Report.

The ministers of the Process of the African Atlantic States also reaffirmed the commitment of the member countries to continue implementing the African Atlantic partnership and strengthening dialogue to promote peace, stability and shared prosperity in the region.

The AASP brings together African countries with an Atlantic coastline, aiming to promote regional cooperation and sustainable development. The initiative focuses on three thematic pillars: political dialogue and security; the blue economy and maritime and energy connectivity; and sustainable development and the environment.

During the meeting, discussions focused on critical issues for the common future of Atlantic states, further reinforcing the value of this platform as a mechanism for consultation and cooperation.

The initiative to establish the AASP stems from the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to make the African Atlantic area a zone of peace, stability and shared prosperity. The Praia meeting follows ministerial gatherings held in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

Since its inception, the Process of the African Atlantic States has made significant progress in strengthening its institutional and operational framework. Notable achievements include the establishment of a Secretariat based in Rabat, the creation of three Thematic Groups, and the adoption of a Joint Action Program.

The Praia meeting marks a decisive step in the implementation of common strategies among the African Atlantic states, thereby consolidating their role in the global and regional governance of the Atlantic Ocean.
