Two NGOs on Monday welcomed the historic Resolution 2797 adopted by the UN Security Council, describing it as a significant step toward a definitive settlement of the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Speaking during the general debate of the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in Geneva, the organizations praised the resolution for enshrining the Moroccan Autonomy Plan as the sole basis for achieving a final resolution to the dispute.
Addressing the Council on behalf of OCAPROCE International, Saadani Maolainain said the adoption of Resolution 2797 comes at a crucial moment in a conflict that has lasted nearly half a century and has caused suffering and deprivation for Sahrawi populations held in the Tindouf camps in southwestern Algeria.
A former Sahrawi deportee to Cuba, Maolainain emphasized that the autonomy plan presented by Morocco constitutes the only viable, fair, and realistic solution capable of guaranteeing full political, economic, and social rights within the framework of comprehensive reconciliation under Moroccan sovereignty and in accordance with UN principles.
Also speaking under the agenda item devoted to the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ report, Gajmoula Boussif stressed that the effective promotion of human rights requires a stable institutional framework that ensures access to justice and public services.
She further commended Morocco’s efforts in socio-economic development and its cooperation with the international human rights system, stating that a durable settlement would ensure the full enjoyment of fundamental rights for all concerned populations, including those living in the Tindouf camps.
