The Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, announced on Tuesday that the feasibility and preliminary engineering studies for the African-Atlantic Gas Pipeline — also known as the Nigeria-Morocco pipeline — have been completed, including the determination of its optimal route.

Benali shared the latest updates on the project at the Upper House’s question time, noting that “special-purpose company” is currently being established between Morocco and Nigeria to make the final investment decision by the end of the current year.

In this context, the Minister said that the intergovernmental agreement among the member states concerning the project was approved, as well as the host country agreement.

She emphasized that the project, with an estimated budget of around $25 billion, serves as a catalyst for economic, industrial, and digital development, a pillar for job creation, and a cornerstone in transforming Morocco into a major corridor linking Europe, Africa, and the Atlantic basin.

Alongside this project, the government launched a call for tenders last April to develop the national natural gas infrastructure, which will connect the port of Nador to Kenitra and Mohammedia, extending to Dakhla, with the aim of linking up with the Africa-Atlantic Gas Pipeline (Nigeria-Morocco).

This project will provide infrastructure stretching over 6,000 kilometers across several African countries, with a capacity ranging between 15 and 30 billion cubic meters of gas per year. It will also supply energy to around 400 million people in 13 countries.
