The situation at the Oued El Makhazine dam remains stable, with a decrease in the reservoir level thanks to the operation of the automatic spillway, said, on Tuesday, Yassine Wahby, head of the water resources assessment and planning department at the Loukkos Hydraulic Basin Agency (ABHL).

In a statement to MAP, Wahby described the dam as being “in very good condition,” noting that “the management of the rise in the reservoir level is proceeding correctly and normally.”

He added that regular inspection and safety monitoring operations are being carried out, stressing that these checks have shown positive indicators.

The official recalled that the gradual discharge of water from the Oued El Makhazine dam reservoir is continuing, despite the significant water inflows registered by the hydraulic structure in recent days.

This gradual evacuation is contributing to lowering of the reservoir level, he said, specifying that the spillway flow exceeded 787 cubic meters (m3) per second on Tuesday morning. He explained that this flow rate increases as the dam reservoir level rises and decreases as it recedes.

Wahby also pointed out that the Oued El Makhazine dam had received significant water inflows over the past 24 hours (from 7 a.m. Monday to 7 a.m. Tuesday), estimated at around 109 million m3, which impacted the reservoir level.

He concluded that the situation “is being managed positively, with the mobilization of all stakeholders,” adding that the reservoir level is expected to continue to decline gradually thanks to ongoing spillway operations and improved weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the authorities in the city of Ksar El Kebir are maintaining on-the-ground operations to protect citizens, secure their property, and implement preventive measures in response to the rising water level of the Loukkos River, which has flooded several neighborhoods as well as the southern and western entrances to the city.

These measures were adopted based on field assessments and weather forecasts, indicating that the floodwaters have not yet receded and that the level of risk remains high.

Citizens are therefore called upon to exercise the utmost vigilance and caution, and to refrain, for the time being, from returning to the affected areas until conditions improve and official instructions are issued, in order to safeguard lives and ensure public safety.
