Peru’s Congress has urged the country’s Foreign Ministry to express clear support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Western Sahara, describing it as the most credible and viable path toward a lasting resolution of the dispute.
In a motion passed by an overwhelming majority, lawmakers called on Peru’s government to advocate for the initiative on the international stage.
The motion notes the importance of dialogue and cooperation in settling the issue while focusing on the broader impact of the dispute on regional development.
According to the document, the prolonged nature of the dispute has delayed long-overdue economic and political integration in the Maghreb.
Lawmakers urged all parties to return to the UN-led roundtable process with a spirit of mutual respect and open communication and aim for a realistic and consensual political settlement.
Introduced by legislators Maria Del Carmen Alva Prieto and Ernesto Bustamante Donayre, the motion recalls that Morocco’s Autonomy Plan has gained recognition as the only serious and credible basis for resolving the dispute.
Peruvian lawmakers pointed to the broad international backing for the plan, with more than 120 countries, including Spain, the United States, France, Brazil, and Chile, publicly endorsing it.
They stressed the proposal’s role in fostering stability and economic growth in North Africa, aligning with the shared interests of the global community.
The document further references UN Security Council Resolution 2756, adopted on October 30, 2024, which acknowledges Morocco’s efforts in advancing a final and peaceful resolution.
The motion further affirms that Peru, as a country committed to upholding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, has a duty to stand behind Morocco’s Autonomy Plan.
