Police in Tangier arrested on Sunday a 33-year-old Portuguese national, who was wanted by Interpol as well as authorities in Portugal.
A statement from the police said intelligence from the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST) enabled police to identify the suspect, who entered Morocco illegally.
Initial investigation data indicate that the arrested suspect is one of five classified dangerous criminals who were involved in a prison break from Portugal on September 7 this year.
The suspect was serving a 25-year prison sentence in Portugal for his involvement in a criminal network, armed robbery, and threats.
Now, the international arrest warrant against him has the man facing a prison sentence of three years.
Police put the suspect in detention as part of an ongoing investigation pending procedural measures for the extradition process.
The arrest is part of Morocco’s greater efforts and cooperation against transnational crime.
The Moroccan police statement concluded reaffirming the country’s commitment to enhancing international security cooperation mechanisms, particularly related to identifying, trafficking, and arresting individuals wanted internationally for serious criminal offenses.
In May, Interpol emphasized the country’s contribution to international security, as well its participation in around 20 significant security operations worldwide.
