In a new blow to the Algerian regime, the president of the Movement for the Self-Determination of Kabylia (MAK) and the Provisional Kabyle Government (Anavad), Ferhat Mehenni, proclaimed on April 20 in front of the United Nations headquarters in New York, the independence of the Kabyle state.
Speaking in front of members of the Kabyle community and many sympathizers, Mehenni, a historical figure of Kabyle independence, notably stressed in his speech that the time has come to “re-establish, in an official and definitive manner, the Kabyle State”.
Alongside this proclamation, which crowns decades of Kabyle independence activism, the Kabyle Information Agency “SIWEL” published a “draft proclaiming the rebirth of the Kabyle State”, which can be consulted from its official portal ( https://jo.kabylie-gouv.org/2024/04/20/loi-n-df-2024-04-asan-01/https://jo.kabylie-gouv.org/2024/04/20/loi-n-df-2024-04-asan-01/), and which is, according to the document, part of the “decolonization project of Kabylia.
“By this present law, (…), in the name of the Kabyle people, I proclaim the return to life and for eternity, of the Kabyle State/Awanek Aqvayli, on the national and international scene”, had insisted Mr. Mehenni in his speech.
In the wake of this announcement, demonstrations took place in various Kabyle localities, as elsewhere, in Europe and North America, in the face of a perceived silence from the Algerian authorities.
