Qatar and Jordan on Monday renewed their unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces while addressing the 4th Committee of the UN General Assembly.
Jassim Al-Thani, Qatar’s representative to the UN reiterated his country’s support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, describing it as a “constructive initiative” and an “objective” basis for a realistic and sustainable solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara dispute.
He also expressed support for the UN-led political process and efforts seeking to facilitate a sustainable political solution through compromise within the framework of the process in accordance with Security Council resolutions — including Resolution 2703.
A solution to the dispute should also be with respect for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, he said, commending efforts by both UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and his envoy Staffan de Mistura.
The Qatari diplomat concluded his remarks by expressing his hope for a definitive and sustainable solution to the dispute, noting that a resolution would strengthen stability and cooperation in the region, as well as international peace and security.
Jordan echoed the same sentiment on Monday, emphasizing the respect for the legitimate rights of Morocco regarding its sovereignty over its southern provinces and its territorial integrity.
Jordan’s UN representative Ahmad Samir Habashenh conveyed his country’s steadfast support for Moroccan territorial integrity as well as for the UN-led political process. He spoke approvingly of the UN’s efforts to revive discussions with the goal of achieving a realistic and sustainable solution to the regional dispute.
Jordan’s recent remarks appear to be a response to the recent hostile ruling from the European Court of Justice, which called for annulling the EU-Morocco fisheries and agriculture agreements.
Earlier this month, the court challenged Morocco’s sovereignty over its southern provinces, claiming that the agreements violate the “right to self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.”
The court’s claims are riddled with errors and bias, Morocco responded, reiterating that it will sign no trade or diplomatic agreements that do not include respect for its territorial integrity.
King Mohammed VI also addressed the situation this past Friday.
While his speech before the parliament did not explicitly mention the court’s ruling, he stressed that Morocco’s position is gaining momentum in the international community.
The monarch cited the growing list of countries that support Morocco’s autonomy plan and those that fully recognize its sovereignty, saying that it is only a matter of time before other countries recognize the kingdom’s sovereignty over the disputed region.
