Medical professors at Rabat’s Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy are set to stage a warning strike on March 26 to protest the deteriorating conditions in regional hospitals.
The professors, affiliated with the National Higher Education Union’s Rabat branch, announced a comprehensive walkout while maintaining emergency and intensive care services.
Protest organizers say that the unplanned distribution of professors across regional hospitals has created catastrophic conditions.
The striking professors condemned the severe shortage of medical equipment and supplies that hampers their ability to provide adequate care.
They also categorically rejected what they described as “dangerous and chaotic dual management systems” within the healthcare network. Specifically, they criticized the lack of coordination between the Ibn Sina University Hospital administration and the regional health directorate.
Professors demanded the directorate cease involvement in university professor affairs and called for faculty to be included in drafting implementation decrees for the territorial health group law.
Protesters are calling for improved working conditions and necessary resources in regional hospitals while condemning what they call arbitrary practices against university professors. These professors are sounding the alarm that if crises occur in these hospitals, they are unfairly at risk to take the blame, which could gravely tarnish their reputation.
They also lamented administrators for blaming professors for their failures to provide suitable working environments.
The union stressed that in the absence of immediate action, further escalation remains likely.
Morocco’s health sector has been grappling with recurrent strikes and protests, from practitioners to students.
In January, doctors and healthcare workers in Morocco announced a protest but later on called it off.
It was only in November 2024 that medical students ended a year-long strike, following an agreement with the ministries of Higher Education and Health.
