The reconstruction and renovation program for schools affected by Al Haouz earthquake has “reached significant levels of completion”, Minister of National Education, Preschool and Sports Chakib Benmoussa said here on Friday.

Efforts made to overcome the difficulties facing education in areas affected by Al Haouz earthquake “have made it possible to reach several set objectives”, Benmoussa explained at a press conference on the occasion of the start of the 2024-2025 school year.

“We no longer have pupils in tents or boarding schools outside the province”, he said, noting the creation of boarding schools close to family homes.

The first objective set since the disaster, he highlighted, was to refllect on ways to ensure children’s schooling, despite the challenges present at the time. Thanks to the general mobilization, solutions were found in a matter of days to allow return to classes and the psychological assitance of pupils.

The minister added that the second phase was designed to ensure and improve study conditions and to take into account the difficult weather conditions in the areas affected by the earthquake, making it possible to switch from traditional tents to others more adapted to the needs, thus improving reception and learning conditions for pupils.

Technical and engineering studies required for schools were also carried out following a technical assessment to ensure pupils’ safety.
