Vivo Energy Morocco and Royal Air Maroc (RAM) have launched the first flight connecting Morocco and Europe with sustainable fuel.
The RAM flight, which is carbon-neutral and fueled with Sustainable Aviation Fuel, took off on Thursday connecting Marrakech to Paris, the two partners said in a joint statement today.
“This initiative highlights the commitment of both companies to promoting more sustainable aviation in Morocco,” the statement explained, noting that the launch is also with the aim of contributing to responsible tourism as the North African kingdom becomes a preferred tourist destination in Africa.
Matthias de Larminat, Managing Director of Vivo Energy Morocco, expressed satisfaction with the launch. This first delivery represents a “major step in our commitment to decarbonizing the aviation sector,” he noted.
“As one of the leading fuel distributors in Morocco, we are proud to actively contribute to the country’s energy transition,” de Larminat added.
Royal Air Maroc CEO Hamid Addou also commended the agreement between the two companies. He argued that the initiative aims to demonstrate a commitment to “more responsible aviation and reduced carbon footprint.”
According to Addou, “the use of SAF on this Marrakech-Paris flight is a first between Morocco and Europe.” h
The operation saw VIVO Energy provide renewable synthetic components, allowing for a significant reduction in CO2 emissions amounting to 10 tons.
The fuel used in the operation contains renewable raw materials like used oils or municipal waste as well as biomass.
“Its use can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80% over the entire lifecycle compared to conventional fuel,” the joint statement concluded.
