US Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted before the United Nations Security Council the establishment by Morocco and the United States of the UN Group of Friends on Artificial Intelligence to reinforce and coordinate efforts in digital cooperation, particularly in the area of artificial intelligence (AI).

“This summer, the U.S. and Morocco established a group at the United Nations, open to all member states, where experts from every region are sharing best practices for adopting artificial intelligence,” said Blinken, who was chairing a UN Security Council ministerial meeting on the role of AI in promoting international peace and security.

“Now, that’s real progress,” the US top diplomat pointed out during this meeting organized recently by the United States, which assumes the presidency of the Security Council for the month of December, with a view to discussing emerging technologies and efforts undertaken by Member States to advance the global dialogue on the opportunities and challenges they present.

Last July, Morocco’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Omar Hilale, and his U.S. counterpart, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, established the Group of Friends on Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development, which currently brings together more than 70 Member States.

The launch of this group took place following the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the first-ever UN resolution on artificial intelligence (AI) initially co-sponsored by Morocco and the United States and by 125 Member States at the moment of its adoption.

The choice of Morocco to co-chair this Group of Friends with the United States reflects the credibility, trust and respect enjoyed by Morocco at the UN and international levels, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, as well as the solidity and strength of the strategic and multidimensional partnership binding Rabat and Washington.

According to the report “AI Investment Potential Index (AIIPI)”, released by the French Development Agency (AFD) last November, Morocco is the leading African destination offering the best investment potential in the area of artificial intelligence.
