By 2035, Morocco could have up to 2.5 million electric vehicles on its roads, providing a storage capacity equivalent to 91% of the country’s total electricity demand, according to a new report by the IMAL Initiative for Climate and Development.

The study, conducted by the North African climate think tank, highlights that integrating decentralized renewable energy systems, such as rooftop solar, battery storage, and electric mobility, could not only strengthen Morocco’s energy resilience but also create around 43,000 green jobs nationwide.

Presented Thursday in Rabat, the report titled “The Potential of Decentralized Renewable Energy Systems in Morocco” stresses that decentralized renewable systems represent a powerful lever for enhancing the competitiveness and stability of the national electricity grid, while helping achieve Morocco’s 2030 and 2050 climate targets.

It underlines that coupling solar rooftops with electric mobility, especially through Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology, would provide crucial grid flexibility and contribute to balancing supply and demand across regions.

Beyond their environmental impact, decentralized systems could foster inclusive territorial development and strengthen energy solidarity between urban and rural areas, the report adds.

IMAL calls for revising the institutional and regulatory framework to fully integrate decentralized generation into the national energy strategy.

The report also recommends operationalizing the law on self-generation (Law 82-21) by 2026, investing in smart grids, promoting dynamic electricity pricing, and creating a national fund to support households and SMEs in adopting renewable technologies.
