Tetouan hosted a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Tetouan–Essaouira International University for Cultural and Heritage Sciences on Friday, chaired by André Azoulay, Adviser to HM the King and Founding President of the Essaouira-Mogador Association.

This meeting forms part of the momentum toward the establishment of this major academic and cultural project, which aims to promote the cultural and civilizational heritage of Tetouan and Essaouira, affirm the position of both cities as reference hubs for cultural dialogue, and strengthen their influence at the national and international levels.

Speaking on the occasion, Azoulay stressed that the establishment of the university marks a major milestone, noting that the time has come to deconstruct, explain, and teach how and why Morocco’s leadership in the world has not only been consolidated, but is now recognized by the international community.

The Moroccan model has now established itself as a point of reference for all, made possible by the enlightened vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, which has enabled Morocco to experience its diversity as a source of richness, Azoulay said. He noted that in terms of otherness and the coexistence of spiritual traditions and histories, Morocco remains an example of unity and openness.

“Our unity is nurtured by the fact that each of our civilizations, spiritual traditions, and identities has contributed its full depth, exemplary nature, and resilience to our national unity, and this is what makes Morocco a unique country.”

He further emphasized that it is within this framework that the university will fully assume its role as a space for rational research, dedicated to explaining how Morocco has succeeded in reconciling diversity, memory, and modernity.

The university will help consolidate achievements and prepare young people to go further by continuing and developing what has already been accomplished in this field, Azoulay added.

He recalled that Tetouan and Essaouira, by virtue of their historical and cultural heritage, fully legitimize this project and constitute its territorial anchor, while also giving it a vocation to shine at the national, African, and international levels.

The meeting was marked by the presentation of an overview of the university creation project, its general context, and its strategic objectives. It also provided an opportunity to examine the academic offering, including training programs, scientific research programs, and continuing education mechanisms.

The Board’s work was also marked by the signing of a partnership agreement relating to the management and financing of the project, involving several institutional partners as well as stakeholders from the cultural and academic fields.
