The Interministerial Delegation for Human Rights (DIDH) is asserting itself as a strategic player in bringing together the human rights and sustainable development agendas, the Interministerial Delegate for Human Rights, Mohamed El Habib Belkouch, said on Monday in Geneva.

Morocco will continue to play “a bridging role between its national commitments, institutional expertise, and multilateral dynamics, especially in sexual and reproductive health, gender equality, and protection of vulnerable groups,” Belkouch stated during a side event of the 59th session of the Human Rights Council (June 16– July 9).

Held under the theme “The Role of National Mechanisms for Implementation, Reporting, and Follow-up (NMIRFs) in Advancing the Human Rights Agenda of the International Conference on Population and Development,” the meeting was organized by UNFPA, OHCHR, Universal Rights Group, and Portugal’s Permanent Mission in Geneva.

The interministerial delegate highlighted Morocco’s experience developed through the DIDH mechanism in its capacity as MNMRS, highlighting the role that this structure can play in strengthening the integration of human rights at the heart of Morocco’s public policies and the agenda of the International Conference on Population and Development.

He also highlighted Morocco’s experience through the DIDH as an NMIRF, underlining how this mechanism strengthens the integration of human rights in public policies and the implementation of the conference agenda.

According to Belkouch, the DIDH’s institutional anchoring and expertise in engaging with international mechanisms give it a unique capacity to build bridges between different levels of action.

The event, attended by representatives of many countries and organizations, including Morocco’s Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Ambassador Omar Zniber, also featured the launch of a report on UNFPA partnerships with NMIRFs to promote gender equality and sexual and reproductive health rights.

Among the countries profiled, Morocco stands out as a “successful model” of coordination between ministries and local actors. The report highlights Morocco’s progress in integrating recommendations at the territorial level, particularly in reproductive health strategies and efforts to combat violence against women, supported by UNFPA’s Morocco office.

According to the report, Morocco offers one of the most advanced examples of translating human rights recommendations into concrete action on the ground.
