Thursday will mark the beginning of the month of Rajab, the seventh month in the Islamic calendar
The Moroccan Ministry of Islamic Affairs said on Tuesday the new crescent moon for the month of Rajab was not visible during the sighting operation.
“The ministry contacted all the religious affairs representatives across the Kingdom and the units of the Royal Armed Forces involved in moon sighting. They all confirmed that the moon was not sighted,” the ministry said.
This means that the month of Jumada al-Akhirah also known as Jumada II has completed its full 30 days, and the first day of Rajab will be Thursday.
Rajab holds special importance in the Islamic calendar, as it precedes Sha’ban and the holy month of Ramadan — the ninth month of the Islamic calendar.
Ramadan is the holiest month in the calendar. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from eating and drinking from dawn to sunset.
During this time, Muslims fast from 29 days to 30 days, depending on the crescent month.
Religious committees also determine the beginning of the holy month by conducting a crescent sighting.
