The President of the French National Assembly, Yael Braun-Pivet, reaffirmed France’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara during a visit to Rabat on Friday.
Speaking at the Moroccan House of Representatives during the closing seminar of the Morocco-European Union institutional twinning program, Braun-Pivet noted France’s strong historical, cultural, and strategic ties with Morocco. France “will continue to support the Kingdom in facing its existential challenges,” including the Sahara issue, she said.
Braun-Pivet reiterated France’s newfound stance, stating that the present and future of the Sahara “fall within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.”
She also announced that the French National Assembly is committed to supporting the development of the region. This includes collaboration with French businesses and organizations to foster economic and cultural growth, Braun-Pivet explained.
She revealed plans for a possible parliamentary mission to the Sahara. The mission would aim to encourage new partnerships and projects that benefit local communities.
France officially recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and endorsed Morocco’s autonomy plan last July. President Emmanuel Macron notably sent a letter to King Mohammed VI on the 25th anniversary of his ascension to the throne to convey France’s new position.
Since then, the two countries have frequently vowed to strengthen cooperation in various sectors and open a new chapter in bilateral relations.
In November, the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Morocco (CFCIM) organized the Morocco-France Economic Days in the southern Moroccan regions of Laayoune Sakia El Hamra and Dakhla-Oued Eddahab.
The event attracted around 50 French business leaders and decision-makers, who explored the economic potential and investment opportunities within these regions.
These companies explored collaboration prospects and assessed investment projects with local economic players.
