The posthumous tribute paid to the late His Majesty King Hassan II by Angola’s President João Lourenço, in recognition of Morocco’s support for his country’s independence struggle, is a reaffirmation of the historic friendship between the two nations, Angola’s ambassador to Morocco, José Filipe, said on Saturday in Rabat.
Speaking at an official ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Angola, held at the Mohammed V Theater, Filipe said the Medal of Honor awarded on Nov. 6 to the late Sovereign “remarkably exalts the nobility of a country already independent, which with vision and courage helped Angola move towards freedom.”
Recalling that friendly relations between the two peoples date back to before 1975, with Morocco among the first to recognize Angola, he noted that both countries later established several concrete cooperation mechanisms that are now being revitalized to address new challenges.
The Angolan ambassador said that as a diplomatic mission “our goal is to deepen the historical cooperation ties uniting the two countries,” stressing the expansion of partnerships in agriculture, logistics, energy and industrial processing.
For his part, the director of African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Abdellah Boutadghart, praised the fraternal and friendly gesture of the President of the Republic of Angola in paying a posthumous tribute to the late His Majesty King Hassan II.
“This gesture honors not only the late Sovereign’s contribution to Angola’s independence, but also His commitment to Africa’s freedom, peace and development,” he said, noting that the choice of Nov. 6, which coincides with the anniversary of the late HM King Hassan II’s historic speech announcing the Green March, gives the distinction a particularly symbolic significance.
Boutadghart also welcomed the current positive momentum in cooperation between Morocco and Angola, citing the holding of three Joint Commissions, the signing of several legal instruments and the launch of numerous projects in various sectors.
The ceremony took place in a warm atmosphere marked by artistic performances to the rhythm of Angolan music, attended by members of the diplomatic corps accredited to Morocco, members of the Angolan community and prominent figures from various backgrounds.
