The support expressed by the United Kingdom for Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara heralds a new era of strengthened and mutually beneficial partnership between Rabat and London, said Joe Powell, a Labour member of the House of Commons (the lower house of the British Parliament).
The MP, who chairs the Labour Friends of Morocco group, noted that the two kingdoms have just given more substance to a cooperative relationship rooted in history and resolutely focused on the future.
This partnership now covers key sectors, ranging from trade and investment to the fight against climate change, the promotion of renewable energies, and cooperation in the field of sports, he said.
By supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan, the United Kingdom has joined world powers such as the United States and France, Powell noted, stressing that the autonomy plan, which stands out for its credibility and pragmatism, is the cornerstone for peace, stability, and security in the region.
The UK expressed on Sunday its full support for the Moroccan autonomy plan, considering it as “the most credible, viable, and pragmatic basis” for a lasting resolution of the regional dispute.
This position was set out in a joint communiqué signed in Rabat by UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, David Lammy, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita. The UK also underlined that it intends to act in line with this position bilaterally, regionally, and internationally.
