The Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and Switzerland’s École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) have signed an agreement to expand their collaborative work on green energy.
The partnership represents a “deepened commitment” to innovative and sustainable research solutions for energy challenges, UM6P said in a statement. The agreement was signed by UM6P President Hicham El Habti and EPFL President Martin Vetterli, with incoming EPFL President Anna Fontcuberta i Morral also present.
This collaboration is set to support scientists from both institutions working in green energy fields. One key feature is the creation of scientific tandems, where UM6P and EPFL professors will jointly lead collaborative projects to maximize expertise and innovation in green energy. The partnership will also allow for shared infrastructure and technological demonstrators, with future potential to extend into other research areas.
EPFL’s Vetterli expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “Together, we are stronger: we bring research excellence in sustainability and a great pool of potential across faculties, centers, and labs in Switzerland and Morocco.”
The president of the two country’s natural features, like lakes, winds, and sunlight, as assets for experimenting with new technologies. “We are well-equipped to test new technologies on a real-world scale,” he said.
For her part, Fontcuberta i Morral underlined UM6P’s “creativity and contagious energy” as well as the two institutions’ shared dedication to fostering global progress through innovation and education.
UM6P President El Habti shared similar optimism, highlighting the broader vision of addressing African environmental challenges. “This expanded collaboration with EPFL reflects our joint commitment to advancing sustainable energy research and scientific innovation across Africa,” he said.
He added that the partnership aims to combine the expertise of UM6P and EPFL to “offer practical, lasting solutions to environmental challenges while actively contributing to the continent’s scientific growth.”
This green energy agreement builds on the “Excellence in Africa” initiative launched in 2020, through which EPFL and UM6P have been advancing research across Africa. After a successful initial phase, the program has been extended to 2031, with expanded focus areas. A new area, dedicated to digital solutions for sustainable cities in West Africa, will explore the potential of digital innovation to improve urban sustainability and resilience.
