The United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) on Monday welcomed its “ongoing” partnership with Morocco aimed at strengthening regional security and counter-terrorism capacities across the African continent.

In a statement marking the fifth anniversary of the inauguration of the UNOCT Programme Office for Counter-Terrorism and Training in Africa, based in Rabat, the UN Office emphasized that this celebration “reflects the continued partnership between the UNOCT and the Kingdom of Morocco to bolster regional security and enhance counter-terrorism capabilities in Africa.”

Since its opening on October 6, 2020, the UNOCT Programme Office in Rabat, in collaboration with Morocco, has achieved “significant” milestones by providing “tailored” counter-terrorism training to more than 1,000 officials from 34 African Member States, the statement noted.

The Office has also helped strengthen the national capacities of African states through knowledge and skills sharing, the promotion of best practices, and the facilitation of regional cooperation among African counter-terrorism agencies, particularly through the organization of four editions of the High-Level Meeting of Heads of African Counter-Terrorism Agencies, known as the Marrakesh Platform.

Furthermore, the UNOCT Programme Office has enhanced coordination with United Nations entities and international partners to ensure effective and sustainable outcomes, according to the same source.

This UN entity has also made a significant contribution to strengthening the counter-terrorism capacities of African Member States and fostering cooperation among regional partners, in line with the United Nations Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy.

The UNOCT Office in Rabat designs and delivers specialized training courses for law enforcement and intelligence officers and supports the development of national counter-terrorism programs in accordance with UN Security Council resolutions and Member States’ obligations under international law.

In 2020, Morocco and the United Nations signed a host country agreement establishing the UNOCT Programme Office for Counter-Terrorism and Training in Africa in Rabat—the first of its kind on the continent.
