Morocco is establishing itself as a model in seawater desalination and the promotion of renewable energies, said Retno Marsudi, the UN Special Envoy for Water, on Tuesday in Marrakech.
In a statement to the press following her talks with Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka on the sidelines of the 19th World Water Congress, Marsudi praised the Moroccan model, based on the use of renewable energies such as wind and solar power, as well as its advances in seawater desalination, stressing that her bilateral meeting with the Moroccan minister was an opportunity to hold in-depth discussions on global water-related challenges.
She also mentioned that 60% of Morocco’s drinking water is expected to come from desalination by 2030, compared to 30% in 2025, underlining that this rapid progress is largely based on public-private partnerships, a point that sparked keen interest during the discussions.
The UN official noted that Morocco’s experience shows “a valuable example” to be shared with other countries facing the same challenges, congratulating the Kingdom for its efforts and significant progress in the field of sustainable water resource management.
Placed under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the 19th World Water Congress, co-organized until December 5 by the Ministry of Equipment and Water and the International Water Resources Association (IWRA), is an opportunity to explore innovative solutions, strategies, and adaptive approaches to water resources in an ever changing world.
Held under the theme “Water in a Changing World: Innovation and Adaptation,” this event provides a platform for experts, practitioners, researchers, policymakers, civil society, and the private sector to exchange knowledge, present innovative research, establish partnerships, and jointly develop concrete solutions to address the complex challenges of global water governance, security, and sustainability.
