Morocco’s Family Code reforms continue to garner international attention with media describing the proposals as “massive changes” that would grant women more rights.
UN Women also recently had positive remarks on the amendments’ transformative potential for gender dynamics in the country.
Myriem Noussairi, a UN Women official based in Morocco, described the country’s Family Code reforms as “highly strategic,” pointing that they reflect evolving societal norms and legal frameworks.
The reforms’ core objectives focus on updating family law by recognizing women’s expanded roles in public and private spheres, she said, adding that they aim to establish more balanced family responsibilities, prioritize children’s welfare, and promote gender equality through comprehensive legal restructuring.
Particularly, the reforms process distinguishes itself through an inclusive, consultative approach, actively engaging civil society, particularly women’s rights organizations, Noussairi added.
The initiative ensures “broader societal support and sustainable social change,” she said, and paves the way for sustainable change.
Noussairi also noted that “UN-Women sees these efforts as strong and positive steps towards a more equitable society,” adding that the organization supports efforts that pursue backing women’s rights and equity within the framework of social cohesion and family structure.
Morocco’s family code amendments address critical areas of family law, including parental responsibilities, marital rights, and children’s legal protections. This is part of the country’s efforts towards aligning its legal system with contemporary social realities and international human rights standards.
The proposals include granting legal guardianship of children to mothers with custody and recognizing the contributions of a wife’s domestic work to the wealth and property accumulated during the marriage.
Not only do the reforms represent a legal amendment, but also Morocco’s strategic investment in social cohesion, gender equity, and sustainable societal development.
